Chondrus Crispus (a.k.a. Irish Moss) is a grade A sea vegetable.  It is found in colder water climates and primarily used to rebuild and repair at the cellular level.  Sea vegetables have an ability to remove toxins from the body.  Alginic acids bind with toxins and eliminate them. This is why seaweed is sometimes prescribed post-chemotherapy.

Instructions for prepping your sea moss:

  1. Remove your sea moss from the package (it will have a slight sea smell which is a good thing).  If you are making a 16oz jar, you will only need to use about 1oz of sea moss due to the sea moss expanding when hydrated.
  2. Thoroughly rinse your seaweed to remove any salt, sand, and debris.
  3. Place thoroughly cleaned sea moss in a bowl and  fill it with spring water (be sure to cover all sea moss with water).
  4. Let your sea moss soak for 8 to 24 hours.  You can also add a little lime juice (preferably fresh key limes)  while soaking to neutralize the ocean taste.

Instructions for making your sea moss gel:

  1. After soaking, drain water from the bowl (you can use the drained water as a face mask by letting it gel up in the refrigerator).  You will notice that the sea moss has lost some color (almost translucent) and has expanded.
  2. Add your sea moss and fresh spring water to a blender (you should add enough water to cover the sea moss fully).
  3. Blend for about 2-3 minutes until product is smooth (you may need to add water little by little if you desire a thinner gel).

Instructions for storing your sea moss gel:

  1. Pour blended gel into a glass jar and refrigerate overnight (preferably with the lid off) for the gel to solidify.
  2. Cover the gel with a cheesecloth or coffee filter in an effort to preserve the sea moss’ freshness.
  3. Your gel should be good for 3-4 weeks.
